WHO WE ARE

Village Voices is a small not-for-profit community choir based in the lovely Northumbrian coastal resort of Seahouses. Our members come from Seahouses and also from many of the surrounding villages - the Bs (Beadnell, Bamburgh, Belford) as well as Shoreston, Lucker, North Sunderland, ... and the farms in between. Our 'home' is the Methodist Church in Main Street, Seahouses.

WHAT WE DO

Our thirty or so sopranos, altos, tenors and basses rehearse weekly for an hour and a half on Thursday evenings. Our main activities consist of some half-dozen concerts per year in aid of various organisations in our area - churches, community halls, R.N.L.I. and the like. With the approach of Christmas we are commonly involved in such activities as Festive Lights switch-ons and carols on a village green: cosier group performances take place in local old peoples' homes.

WHAT WE SING

Our repertoire is in proportion to our numbers. Most performances include a 'songs from the shows' element, perhaps Oklahoma, South Pacific, Cats, The Sound of Music, Les Misérables, Oliver! We enjoy universal gems such as Mozart's Ave Verum, Bach Chorales and Roberton's All in the April Evening. John Rutter features broadly in our programmes, now alongside Howard Goodall's 23rd Psalm. Hymns and carols are varied with such settings as Paul Simon's Bridge Over Troubled Water and folksongs from the region.

HOW TO JOIN US

Come along to the room attached to the back of the Methodist Church, Main Street, Seahouses, a few minutes before 7 pm almost any Thursday evening (we don't stick to school terms or anything like that). Perhaps even better - virtually all our concerts end with refreshments, providing an ideal opportunity to make your interest known to any member of the choir. Or feel free to contact one of the folk listed below.

There is no audition, nor any joining fee. But members do contribute £2 per rehearsal attended.

WHO DOES WHAT

OUR CONCERT at EMBLETON VILLAGE HALL
8th of May 2015

Our concert at Embleton on the 8th of May was unique in our experience - we were joined by other performers. Thanks to our accompanist Pat's professional links she was able to arrange the participation of her Seahouses Middle School Steel Band. The local vicar, Reverend Philip Harratt, provided three 'spots', including encouragement for a community sing-along.

Photographic opportunities were very limited. But the choir provided the bulk of the programme. Our contributions included items from "Cats", "Les Misérables", and "Oliver!"; plus "Rhythm of Life", "You Raise Me Up" and "Like an Eagle".

The occasion was a fund-raising event in support of our local cancer charity; our local dog rescue; and our local air ambulance.

OUR CONCERT at SEAHOUSES METHODIST CHURCH
12th of June 2015

Can a concert be both joyful and sad? We had a most enjoyable evening in Seahouses Methodist Church on the twelfth of June, performing a selection of our repertoire items with solos too plus a couple of poetic recitations. The sadness arose from its being the last time we had the benefit of Vanessa Richards' control as our Conductor and Director of Music.
The men and the soloists.
The back row men had a brief moment of glory as 'Master of the House, Doling out the charm'. Barbara gave us a poem, as did George who also served as Master of Ceremonies. Grace, Jackie and Paul were our musical soloists.
Conductor, accompanist and presentation.
Vanessa had been directing our efforts for two years, always with charm and cheerfulness. Her musical expertise has been matched by accompanist Pat Adams: together then formed a wonderful team. Chairman George was able to mark Vanessa's departure with but a modest token of regard on behalf of all the Village Voices.
